India Under-19 boys were able to defend their title of Asia Cup as they defeated Bangladesh by five runs in a thrilling encounter. The boys in Blue scored 106 and they were able to keep the Tigers to 101. Atharva Ankolekar was the architect of India’s win as the southpaw spinner scalped a five-wicket haul.
India Under-19 innings:
India posted a paltry score of 106 runs after captain Dhruv Jurel won the toss and decided to bat first. The defending champions got off to a worse possible start as they lost three early wickets. However, skipper Dhruv Jurel scored 33 runs to add some stability. Shashwat Rawat scored 19 runs with the help of two fours.
However, India kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Karan Lal added the finishing touches with 37 runs to help India post 106. In fact, the other seven batsmen could not even reach a double-digit score.
Shamim Hossain was the pick of the Bangladesh bowlers as he scalped three wickets and gave away only eight runs in six overs.
Bangladesh also struggled to get going with the bat as they lost four early wickets to be reeling at 16-4. The Tigers’ skipper and wicket-keeper batsman Akbar Ali scored 23 runs to get his team back in the contest.
The lower order showed the gumption to fight for Bangladesh as their ninth wicket partnership added 23 runs. Mrittunjoy Chowdhary, Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Rakibul Hasan scored 21, 12 and 11 respectively to keep Indian bowlers at bay. Furthermore, the Indian bowlers conceded as many as 18 extras.
However, Atharva Ankolekar was right on the money as he scalped a five-wicket haul. Moreover, Akash Singh took three wickets for the reigning champions. Atharva Ankolekar was named as the Man of the Match whereas India’s opener Arjun Azad was the Player of the tournament.
