Every year Malaria takes away the lives of thousands of people in India. Unfortunately, the number of victims is increasing each year.

However, this situation is likely to improve with a simple, yet effective, solar mosquito trapper-cum-destroyer called Hawker. Mathews K Mathews 40 years old, from Kottayam district in Kerala, invented a solar mosquito trapper-cum-destroyer. It is a cost-effective way of getting rid of mosquitoes.

The first city in India to be selected by the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India for transformation into an eco-city.

This instrument is eco-friendly and can be installed anywhere, and also it does not use the chemicals to destroy the mosquito and flies.

The National Innovation Foundation made the official announcement and says,” this device makes use of the smell from septic tanks to attracts mosquito. Once the mosquito gets trapped, the heat built up inside the device as a result of direct sunlight, it kills them.

"There are more than 3,500 types of mosquitoes in our land. "Presently my product with its tube inserted in septic tanks and biogas tanks can attract only the kind of mosquitoes -Armigeres subalbatus- that breed in them. But with NIF's assistance, I am now researching to design devices which would attract other types of mosquitoes too".
